Darcie Jordan is a 17 year old WakeUp facilitator and powerhouse changemaker from Melbourne, Australia. Here, she shares how she became involved with Generation Waking Up and the path ahead for GenUp Australia
From an early age, youth leadership was a major part of my upbringing. Through school initiatives and community organizations across Australia, I developed essential leadership qualities that played a vital role throughout high school as I became highly involved with my school’s environmental sustainability group. Together with a small group of free-spirited and energetic student activists, I gained valuable insight into the power of community and interconnectedness, and a passion for teaching and working with the youth of today.
Lorna Brooks; a teacher, mentor and close friend of mine first introduced me to the work of the Pachamama Alliance upon attending a local Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium. Experiencing the Symposium myself, I found the initiative to reconnect me with past knowledge and teachings across environmental sustainability, social justice and spiritual fulfillment and provided both myself and Lorna with a grounded work in our next steps in encouraging youth leadership. Participating in a Melbourne facilitator training at the age of 15, although experiential in empowering me, it also presented me with a sense of loss in the lack of youth involvement across the initiative in Melbourne.
In concluding our first facilitator training, Lorna and I were aware that our next steps would be to connect the Symposium with young people and across all aspects of our communities. In the months to follow, the Australian training leaders kept us updated on the Pachamama Alliance and we soon learned about their partnership with Generation Waking Up, a youth initiative that was bringing the work of the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium to young people in high school and in their twenties.
In January of 2011, we began the quest to ignite a generation of change makers and focused on the work of holding intergenerational Awakening the Dreamer / WakeUp Facilitator Trainings. The purpose was for people from all walks of life coming together to learn form one another, connect with one another, and take their next paths together with the Symposium and the WakeUp. We hosted another intergenerational training in September of 2011 while we also began the planning of a specific Generation Waking Up training to be held in January of 2012.
The first Generation Waking Up event was followed up in May, with 6 facilitators presenting to groups of secondary school students and politicians from across 5 schools at our local community council chamber. To date, our growing community of WakeUp facilitators in Australia has been part of creating over 10 Wake Ups across Victoria, with events currently growing in a number of the major capital cities across Australia.
Later in the year, during December of 2011, I was given the opportunity to travel to California and work with the GenUp team in San Francisco. The intention was to further the relationship I held with the team and to work collaboratively in preparing me with the tools and resources I may require for the January 2012 WakeUp training. I felt an instant connection and friendship with the amazingly dedicated and passionate Gen Up team and discovered the impact of Generation Waking Up in relation to youth leadership across the globe.

The impact of global leadership continued as my journey then lead me to Ecuador with a diverse group of change makers from literally ‘all walks of life’. Over 12 days, I undertook an enchanting journey into the mystic Amazon Rainforest. The journey led me to new friends, new possibilities and a new self. This path led me to a great intention, to revitalize the youth of the world, whilst continuing to share the stories, the traditions and wisdom of our fellow indigenous brothers and sisters.
Meeting the Achuar people, one of the Indigenous tribes of Ecuador is one chapter of my continuing story which will never be closed. As a facilitator of both the Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium and the “Wake Ups”, it had occurred to me during the trip that I could now truly share the story of the Achuar people and Pachamama as my very core, shifted with the sights, smells and sounds of the tropical rainforest.

A Generation’s vision, as it was to be discovered, was entwined with the people of the rainforest. As they continue to strive to protect the sacredness of Pachamama, you and I strive to connect children from across the world in igniting a generation of young people in bringing forth a thriving, just and sustainable world.
The future for Generation Waking Up Australia is now a bright and thriving one. In January of 2012, we hosted a GenUp training for global citizens from across Australia and New Zealand. Following the training, we are planning to host numerous WakeUps throughout the year, targeting local council members and politicians as a source for continuing our growth and development. “WakeUp” kits will also be offered to those who would like to run WakeUps in their communities and will be a great way to provide eager change agents with the tools, resources, and event props they require to take the WakeUps they are facilitating to the next level. These kits will be rented with funds contributing back to the work of Generation Waking Up, the Pachamama Alliance, and our growing work around Australia.
